This time of year everyone in Cape Town has something to say about the weather. It’s the perfect conversation starter. So much so that we can categorise ourselves. Which of these weather personalities are you?

THE FORECASTER

This person always knows what the weather is going to be doing for the next few days. “Ya, they say rain right up until the weekend but it should clear up next week”

THE GRATEFUL ONE

“Sjoe it’s raining hard hey, but we NEED the rain. WE NEED THE RAIN!”

THE STATISTICIAN

“You know, this is the coldest it’s been in Cape Town in 2 years! We’ve already got 50% more snow on the Cederberg mountains than we usually get in June.”

THE HUMBLE BRAG

“I haven’t been this cold since we were invited to stay in an igloo in Alaska – I had to sleep sandwiched between 2 snow dogs to keep warm. ‘member that Lovie?”

THE WEATHER APP ‘REFERENCER’ (USUALLY ALSO THE WEATHER APP DOUBTER)

“Hmm – my weather app says 16 but that can’t be right, it feels more like 10 degrees!”

THE FEAR MONGER

“We shouldn’t be driving at all in the rain because that’s when accidents happen… I’m not going to the shops in this wet weather, I could slip on the wet tiles… if theres thunder and lightning don’t forget to unplug all your electronics and whatever you do dont talk on your land line!”

THE OVER SHARER

varies from: “I’m not going to the loo, it’s it’s too cold to sit on the toilet seat” to “I can feel a cold sore coming on” ( usually said just after they’ve kisses you hello).

Is this a rule for Winter?

“Thou shalt always entertain conversations about the weather…but only for 2 minutes”
