The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in the Western Cape is calling on communities across the province to have their say on the future of voting in the country.
Led by Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse, the IEC will host a series of public engagements on electronic voting (e-Voting) in all regions of the Western Cape between 12 and 30 September 2025.
The programme forms part of the IEC’s six-month national initiative to gather public views on e-Voting, ensuring that citizens, political parties, and civil society play a role in shaping how elections could be conducted in future.
The inputs collected will contribute to the refinement of the IEC’s Policy Discussion Document on Electronic Voting Systems.
A final policy document, following reviews and discussions, will be presented to policymakers, including Parliament, for debate and a decision on whether electronic voting should be adopted in South Africa.
Western Cape engagement schedule:
- Cape Town Metro: 12 September – Khayelitsha
- Cape Town Metro: 15 September – Somerset West
- West Coast: 16 September – Malmesbury Town Hall
- Cape Winelands: 22 September – Worcester Town Hall

Key national timelines include the conclusion of public consultations in September 2025, the review of submissions in October 2025, and the drafting of a Green Paper in March 2026.
Members of the public can contribute by attending the regional workshops or by making submissions via the IEC’s dedicated e-Voting webpage, or by emailing evoting@elections.org.za
The deadline for written submissions is 30 September 2025.
