A dramatic 16-hour hostage situation in Tshwane, involving a police constable, has had a deadly outcome. The Mamelodi East officer held his mother and his 18-year-old nephew hostage since early yesterday morning, following a family dispute.

Last night, he released his 69-year-old mother. After gunshots rang out, police members breached the property and found the bodies of the police officer and his nephew. Meanwhile, The Police watchdog, IPID, says it will assist in investigations into the 16-hour hostage situation that turned fatal.

 

 The Special Task Team were on the scene

 

A 32-year-old police constable is believed to have turned a gun on himself, after holding his 18-year-old nephew and his 69-year-old mother hostage at a home in Mamelodi East. The Special Task Team were called to the scene in the morning, and following several hours of negotiating, the elderly woman was released at 23:00 last night.

 

The incident could be related to a family dispute

 

Police say several shots were fired inside the house during the incident. Officers later found the bodies of the constable and his teen nephew. At this stage, police suspect that the incident could be related to a family dispute. A case including counts of murder and kidnapping is being investigated.
