A week-long crackdown on counterfeit and illicit goods in the Western Cape has resulted in the seizure of nearly 4 000 fake products valued at an estimated R1 million.
The joint operation involved the Provincial Operations Command Centre, the Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team, and several brand-protection partners.
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, officers inspected 34 shops and commercial premises across towns including Vredenburg, Porterville, Piketberg, Citrusdal, Vredendal and Clanwilliam.
“A total of 3 759 counterfeit items were seized during the operation. The items range from card games, branded products, tobacco products and accessories.”
Gwala added that counterfeit goods not only harm the economy but also pose a dangerous threat to consumers.
