Wedding gifts: the good, the bad, and the ugly

It’s wedding season and we’re about to enter the month of love. Getting married can be quite an expensive affair. Professional planners Great Occasions says that it can cost between R70 000 and R200 000 to have a wedding.

Get some money back from the guests

Some people opt to politely ask for money instead of gifts at their wedding. This might offset the cost of marriage but it doesn’t always work out that way. In Lindy’s case someone gave her and her husband Peter a very curious envelope with cash in:

If you do want gifts, it’s probably best to have a registry

According to a survey done in The Knot’s annual Wedding Registry Study the average newlywed couple has about 125 items on their registry. It’s probably best to ask guests to stick to the registry, especially considering what some of our listeners got given:
