Former Cheetahs and CUT (Central University of Technology) rugby player Rayno Nel has made history by becoming the first African — and the first man from outside Europe or North America in 48 years — to win the prestigious World’s Strongest Man title.
Nel clinched the title on Sunday in his debut appearance at the event, held in Sacramento, California. He narrowly defeated defending champion Tom Stoltman by just half a point. According to USA TODAY, he is also the first rookie to win the title since 1997.
“I’m just over the moon,” the 30-year-old told reporters. “To represent South Africa in any way whatsoever, it feels surreal. I know it means a lot to my people.”
Weighing in at 148kg, Nel began strongman training in 2022 while continuing to work as an electrical engineer. Before his strength career, he captained the CUT rugby team and played professionally for the Cheetahs.
His win marks a major milestone for African representation in strength sports.
