Former Springbok rugby star Percy Montgomery has described the special moment he helped save a baby dolphin in Arniston on Saturday afternoon.

Montgomery was in the seaside Overberg town to watch the Springboks takes on the Wallabies, as part of a SA Rugby Magazine promotional event, which also featured Stormers coach John Dobson and our very own Ryan O’Connor.

Following the game, Ryan, Percy and some other mates were driving past Shark Point when they spotted what looked like a shark stranded on the beach below.

But they soon realised it was a baby dolphin, and made their way down the cliffs.

Percy says natural instinct kicked in and he picked the dolphin up, to place it back into the ocean.

But it took a few tries, and Percy had to go into the ocean completely. Eventually the dolphin made its way into deeper seas.

“It was just incredible, I swam with them in Bermuda, but for me, saving a little baby dolphin was unbelievable. It was such a special moment, coming to Arniston, the Bokke won, and saving a little baby dolphin is just amazing!”
