More than 100,000 people flocked into Cape Town’s city centre on Sunday for the annual Festive Lights Switch-On, with Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis hailing the crowds for showing “amazing unity and Christmas spirit” as the season was officially launched under the theme United in Hope.
The celebration, which stretched across the Grand Parade, Adderley Street and Darling Street, was one of the biggest turnouts in the event’s 56-year history.
“These lights are so much more than just decorations – they also symbolise the hope, joy, unity and potential of our beautiful city,” said Hill-Lewis
The programme of live entertainment featured headline sets from DJ Zinhle and GoodLuck, alongside performances by Early B & Justin Vega, Kurt Darren, Tarryn Lamb, Karabo Mogane and the District Six Hanover Minstrel Group.
Gospel favourites The Heavenly Quartez and dance crews added to the atmosphere as surrounding streets filled with music and colour.
The emotional high point came at dusk when Hill-Lewis flipped the switch while wearing a festive jersey designed by Wear the Hope Challenge winner Marnus Botha.
Spectators were then treated to projection mapping on the front of City Hall, where 3D visuals and storytelling paid tribute to the city’s resilience and heritage.
“Thanks to extensive planning by the City’s Safety and Security teams, supported by SAPS and event personnel, the celebration unfolded smoothly.”
The Mayor also extended public transport services, which ensured that families could travel safely to and from the city centre.
