The World Health Organization for the African region, says it aims to reach up 40-million young people, across Africa, with its new “Mask Up, Not Down”-campaign.

The campaign, launched this week, is meant to encourage especially young people to wear their masks correctly, to prevent the spread of covid-19.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, says adhering to health- and safety measures is the only way to avoid contracting the virus.

She says the campaign will run on social-media platforms across Africa.

Moeti also warns that the upcoming holiday season, may lead to a marked increase in covid-19 infections.

This, as millions of people across the continent will be traveling to be close to their loved ones over the Christmas holidays.

She says people become careless when around those they know, which leads to a greater transmission of the corona-virus, especially among families and close-knit communities.
