Vacant City-land in Rondebosch East earmarked for mixed-use development

Published on

The City of Cape Town has invited residents and interested parties to an Open Day on Saturday, 11 October, to discuss the details of a proposed mixed-use development in Rondebosch East.

The property is located along a stretch of Kromboom Road and is currently vacant.

The council took the “in-principle” decision a few months ago to dispose and develop the property in question.

While not a legislative requirement, the Metro says this Open Day serves as an information-sharing session to enhance the public participation process undertaken to date and to ensure residents are included in the decision-making process.

A statutory public participation process was conducted between 13 September and 13 October 2024. During this period, interested and affected parties were invited to submit comments, all of which were duly considered and responded to by the City.

The public participation process marked the initial phase in the release of the property. Further opportunities for engagement will follow through statutory processes related to land use, heritage, and environmental applications.

The mixed-use development proposals for this property include a residential component, retail space, the upgrading of transport and road facilities in the area, and, importantly, an envisioned upgrade to the natural assets of this site, incorporating walkways, boardwalks and indigenous vegetation.

No land use approvals have been granted at this stage, and the potential release of the property remains subject to a competitive bidding process.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim, says they are excited to bring this proposal to residents, which offer a beautiful, modern and environmentally-sensitive development in one of the urban hearts of Cape Town.

“We’d really love to hear from the neighbourhood and larger community, and we invite all interested parties to see first-hand the potential that this site holds for the area and to speak to our project team personally.”

Details of the Open Day:

  • Date: 11 October 2025
  • Time: 10:00 to 14:00
  • Place: Vera School, Rondebosch East
