The Cape Flats Safety Forum has renewed its call for the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to the Cape Flats amid escalating gun violence across the region.

Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs says the situation has become increasingly dire, warning that urgent intervention is needed as the festive season approaches.

“A special probe needs to be set up to deal with gun violence. As we move towards the festive season, more measures should be put in place to reduce the continuous violence.”

He added that the ongoing shootings continue to claim lives and destabilise communities, calling on government to strengthen policing efforts and support anti-violence initiatives.

In the latest mass shooting, three people who shot and fatally wounded in Gugulethu on Tuesday evening.

Gun Free SA’s Taylor Claire echoed the concerns, describing South Africa’s gun violence as a national crisis.

“At least 33 people are shot and killed every day. The answer is to reduce the number of guns in our communities by recovering and destroying illegal firearms and tightening controls over those held by the police, the military, and civilians.”

Claire warned that the majority of illegal guns circulating in communities originate from legal sources, underscoring the need for stricter oversight to prevent further loss of life.
