UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative government is preparing to end the national lockdown, with the seven-day average daily death toll at over 1,200 and hospitalizations at over 38,000. More than 29,000 people have died in just the last 28 days in the United Kingdom, due to the coronavirus.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the private sector to assist African governments to purchase and distribute vaccines. The SA Medical Research Council says South Africa has recorded an excess of more than 125 000 natural deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic. The cumulative number of excess deaths was measured from 3 May 2020 to 23 January 2021.
