South African break-out music star Tyla has done it! She made history at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles by bagging the first ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance, a brand new category.

She won for her song Water, which has blazed a trail this past year, catapulting Tyla into global stardom and charting on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tyla beat other African stars, including Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, ASAKE & Olamide and Davido featuring South African artist Musa Keys.

During her acceptance speech, she kept it real, bringing out her signature South African accent and vibe.

“Oh my – what the heck! Oh my gosh, guys. This is crazy. Like I never thought I’d say, ‘I won a Grammy at 22 years old, guys’,” she said.

She continued:

“If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla. I’m from South Africa and last year God decided to change my whole life, so thank you so much to God. Thank you to my team, my family; I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here.”

“Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important and I know I’m forgetting some things, but I won a Grammy! Thank you, thank you.”

During an interview following the award Tyla reflected on the response she’s gotten from global stars who are all jamming to Water:

Tyla’s meteoric rise to fame has been nothing short of sensational, and earlier this year Water sold over one million copies, earning a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

The hit single has previously received triple platinum certifications in South Africa, it’s also been certified multi-platinum in Brazil. The song gained further certifications in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland – all platinum.

Water further received gold certification in the UK, France, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Greece, Turkey and Belgium.

The future looks bright for Tyla, who on Friday released the official music video for her new song, Truth or Dare. We smell another hit!

Other big winners of the night includes Taylor Swift, who won Album of the Year for the fourth time, setting a new record.

Song of the Year went to Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For?”, while Record of the Year was won by Miley Cyrus for “Flowers”.
