Western Cape Police have confirmed that investigations are underway following a robbery in Cape Town involving the leader of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement party, Floyd Shivambu and other councillor candidates.

In a statement Shivambu shared online, he said that the party members were attending a verification meeting in the Waterfront on Wednesday, when a suspect broke into the hired car and stole bags, personal belongings and other necessities.

“A thief whose images we later found from the Waterfront Security/Control Room broke into the hired car we were using and stole the travel handbag, handbag, and backpack which had a laptop (MacBook Pro), 2 iPads, watches, personal ID cards, Bank cards, and other basic necessities,” said Shivambu

The politicians revealed images of the alleged suspects, which were retrieved by the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Security/Control room and reportedly handed over to the police to assist with investigations.

Police Captain FC Van Wyk has confirmed that a theft-out-of-motor-vehicle case was registered with the Table Bay Harbour Police Station on Wednesday for investigation.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. Investigations continue; no arrest,” said Van Wyk

Shivambu further noted safety concerns in the area as other theft victims were allegedly also reporting similar crimes at the police station at the time.

“We hope the culprits will be arrested and the stolen items recovered.”
