Tributes for Joburg sisters killed in Klein Karoo crash after Cape Town trip

Published on

Tributes are pouring in following the tragic passing of two sisters from Johannesburg, while a third sister was injured, following a serious crash in the Klein Karoo near Britsdown and Victoria West in the Northern Cape on Saturday night.

The three Moodley sisters, Storm, Connor and Cassidy, were on their way back home after they attended their cousin’s university graduation in Cape Town, when the accident happened.

The 23-year-old Cassidy and 25-year-old Connor died in the crash, while their older sister Storm, 27, was hospitalised. She has since been released and is recovering at home.

People from across the country have been sending their messages of condolences to the family of the sisters.

Taking to Facebook on Tuesday morning, the siblings’ distraught mother, Janene Moodley, expressed her deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Cassidy and Connor in a motor accident near Victoria West in the Karoo. The past two days have been unimaginable, as our family travelled to the Karoo to attend to matters with Storm in the hospital and make the necessary arrangements to bring Connor and Cassidy home to Johannesburg, with the care of our trusted funeral directors. By the grace of God, Storm’s condition has stabilized, and they have safely returned home. Our family is now making funeral arrangements.”

Janene’s partner, Warren Symons, also wrote on social media, asking for privacy, but also thanking everyone for their love and support.

“The ordeal is nowhere close to the end, but with time, my family and I will heal enough to celebrate the lives and people taken from us. No parent should ever have to bury their children. To say that we are shattered is a massive understatement, but with your love and support, healing is possible. Hug your kids a little tighter today and thank God for the breath in their bodies, for we don’t know when our journeys together will end.”

The three sisters are all alumni of Roosevelt High School in Randburg. Storm graduated in 2017, Connor in 2018 and Cassidy in 2020.

Principal Cristel Venter described the tragedy as a profound loss.

“All the staff remember the Moodley family. It was three daughters and a mum, and they were always one. You saw them as a unit. It wasn’t four separate people — it was one person. The closest family that I’ve seen in a long time.”

“All the staff have memories of the Moodley girls, because they were amazing. They were just sunshine in human form. You could not have a bad day with one of those three girls around you.” Venter was quoted as saying.
