In the mid-80s, every teenager (and the parents) wanted to be a fighter pilot, and we had Maverick and Goose to thank for it.

Maverick was Tom Cruise’s hotshot, cocky character in the high-octane blockbuster Top Gun. Many have been wondering if there would ever be a Top Gun II … and now it has been confirmed.

The 1986 movie was such a huge commercial success that it was re-released in Imax 3D in 2013, so the latest news was inevitable.

Cruise has already been shooting scenes; and fresh from learning to fly a helicopter for last year’s “Mission Impossible Fallout,” Cruise has learned to fly a fighter jet for his role as a mentor to a younger generation of pilots.

Top Gun II is due for release next year, and also stars Val Kilmer and Jennifer Connelly. But there’s no sign of Maverick’s old love interest played back then by Kelly McGillis. No doubt the new plot will reveal what became of her. It may even launch a few hit songs the way it did 33 years ago. Berlin’s “Take my breath away” and Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” were the big ones.

Cruise confirmed it all when he paid a surprise visit to Comic-Con 2019 in San Diego this week. Not only is the movie in production, there’s already a trailer, which Cruise introduced himself; if only the auditorium of fans would let him speak:
