Ndiyabulela Vayi, Thando Nkolongo and Yamnkela Mdunyelwa appeared in court this morning on charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, following Van Aardt’s death during a smash-and-grab incident on Jakes Gerwel Drive nearly two weeks ago.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the State alleges the accused were lying on the grass next to Jakes Gerwel Drive when they noticed the vehicle in which the deceased was travelling stop at a red traffic light.

“They allegedly ran towards the vehicle, where Thando Nkolongo is accused of using a spark plug to smash the passenger-side window.”

The State further alleges that Vayi attempted to grab Van Aardt’s handbag and GPS. When she resisted, she was allegedly stabbed several times.

The State has indicated it will oppose any bail application.
