The South African Human Rights Commission is expected to begin its investigations into the July unrest by conducting hearings from today.

The commission says it will, among other things, look into the causes of the unrest, the alleged racially motivated attacks and killings following the protests and the lapses in the security cluster. The near 2-week-long civil unrest, which was concentrated in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, left over 300 people dead and caused billions of rands in infrastructure damages.
