The number of arrests in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, due to the unrest, riots and looting have risen to 1 234.

At the same time, the death toll has increased to 72. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure says the 2 latest provinces to be affected, MP and NC, have had their law enforcement officers patrolling identified areas – in an effort to deter possible opportunistic criminality.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele says that they have a list of 12 instigators of the current unrest and looting in South Africa. News24 is reporting that the controversial former head of the State Security Agency’s rogue special operations unit, Thulani Dlomo, has been identified as a prime suspect.

Community radio stations in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have been targeted during the current unrest. Alex FM in Gauteng, Westside FM in Kagiso and Intokozo FM in Umlazi have been ransacked.
