The Independent Electoral Commission says despite a few isolated challenges, it can confidently declare that this year’s local government elections were free and fair.

IEC chairperson, Glen Mashinini says even though the covid-19 pandemic also provided its unique challenges, the elections proceeded and were completed without any major interruptions. Mashinini says several mechanisms were put in place to protect the electoral process from fraud or disruptions.
