The Delta variant of Covid-19, first reported in India last year, is now the most dominant variant in South Africa.

According to the Department of Health, this highly transmissible variant is responsible for increasing Covid-19 infections, seen in Gauteng and elsewhere.

According to Professor Tulio de Oliveira, the director of Crisp at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, the variant has also been found in the Western Cape.
