With 382 new deaths recorded, there are now 61 029 fatalities. So far, more than 3-point-1-million vaccines have been administered, of which over 129 000 in the past 24 hours.
The Western Cape will over the next 2 weeks start activating more of its covid-19 bed capacity, to cater for the rise in hospital admissions. Head of Health, Dr Keith Cloete says there are currently more than 1 800 people battling covid-19 complications.
Meanwhile, the Delta variant is currently present in about 50% of all specimens tested from June. That’s according to the Deputy Director of the Center for Infectious Disease epidemiology and Research at the University of Cape Town, Prof. Mary Ann Davies. Davies, during Premier Alan Winde’s digicon yesterday said, it takes about 10 to 14 days to get a specimen sequence.
At the same time, a 62-year-old man from Mitchell’s Plain, who spent 6 months in hospital with Covid-19, has pleaded with people to take every precaution to prevent getting ill. Discharged a few weeks ago, Sarawat Ajam also spent 3 months in the Intensive Care Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital. While he was in ICU his mother passed away, he missed his own birthday and was unable to spend the early days with his 1-year-old great-granddaughter. Ajam says he’s lucky to be alive.
