It’s battle as old as time (or at least as old as they started being made on such a big scale) – who makes the best hot cross bun? We decided to put 5 of the biggest retailers in South Africa to our own test with our guest judges Jenny Morris and Chris Forrest.

We had them test 5 hot cross buns from Checkers, Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Food Lovers Market. They tasted each bun without knowing where they were bought and judged them based on appearance, flavour, texture, and fruit content. Taking nothing away from either retailer, Jenny and Chris judged the the buns in the following order:

  1. Food Lover’s Market
  2. Checkers
  3. Pick n Pay
  4. Woolworths
  5. Spar

Chris is in town as part of his coastal tour – he will be performing his one man show “Chris Forrest Is Rather Funny” in Hermanus and will also be doing his show with celebrity chef Pete Goffe-Wood “Don’t Burn The Sausage“.
