Augrabies Falls Roars to Life with Record Water Volumes

Published on

The Augrabies Falls has roared to life with record water volumes. According to SANPARKS, Augrabies Falls National Park is currently experiencing a breathtaking surge in water flow, as the Orange River cascades over the iconic 56-metre-high waterfall at a powerful rate of 3,991 cubic metres per second.

Augrabies Falls Roars to Life with Record Water Volumes

This is a dramatic increase from the usual flow of just 30 to 50 cubic metres per second, making this one of the most remarkable natural events in recent years. This rare spectacle is the result of widespread rainfall across South Africa, prompting increased water releases from both the Vaal Dam and Gariep Dam upstream.

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Spectacular Waterfall Surge

The combination of these factors has transformed the falls into a thunderous, awe-inspiring display of nature’s force. Due to elevated water levels, SANParks has temporarily closed several areas within Augrabies Falls National Park to ensure visitor safety.

Temporary Closures for Visitor Safety

According to JP Louw, Head of Communication at SANParks, the game viewing area, picnic site, and facilities like the braai area and swimming pool are currently off-limits. Out of the park’s multiple viewing decks, only three remain open.

A Rare Opportunity for Visitors

Despite partial closures, the park itself remains open, offering guests a chance to witness this exceptional natural event. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trips soon, as this rare high-volume water flow is expected to last several weeks.

Plan Your Visit Today

For real-time updates, trip planning, or to book accommodation, visit the official SANParks website at www.sanparks.org or call 054 452 9205. Please note that due to increased interest, phone lines may be busy.
