Teen nabbed for grandma assault released on warning

Published on

The case against the 17-year-old accused of assaulting his 92-year-old grandmother has been postponed to the 27th of September.

The teenager appeared in the Kuilsriver Magistrates Court on Monday, on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and contravention of the Older Persons Act. This after a video of him assaulting his grandmother went viral on social media.

The 17-year-old high schooler was arrested earlier this month at his home in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein by police following the circulation of the video.

In the 55-second video, the teenager is seen slapping the grandmother on the face and hitting her head in the kitchen. The elderly woman then falls to her knees before gathering the strength to stand up as her grandson continues to threaten her.

Previously, police colonel Andre Traut stated that officers were called to the scene at the time of the incident, which occurred in June, but the family refused police assistance.

During his court appearance, the teen (who will not be named, as he is still a minor) was released on warning with conditions. These conditions attending his trial, regular school attendance and house arrest from Friday afternoon until Monday morning.

The grandmother, Sindiwe Ngqaza, was also granted a protection order from the court.
