Roosterkoek queen, Rosaleen van As, also known as Tannie Poppie is in Cape Town to sell her internationally-known delicacy.
The 66-year-old is visiting her daughter, Naomi Etson, in Macassar to pass over the roosterkoek baton.
Naomi says her mother is her rolemodel.
“I have battled with employment since staying in Cape Town. I eventually decided to do what my mom does best, and that is to make roosterkoek.”
This has surprised her mother, who is beaming with pride.
“When she was younger, she wanted nothing to do with this. But look at her now. Now, her breads are just as delicious as mine.”
Her roosterkoek has led her to Italy and France. Now, she has travelled 3 hours from Laingsburg in order to help her daughter kickstart her own business.
“My roosterbrood has brought me to Macassar. I came to take my daughter by the hand, so that she can continue with my legacy.”
In fact, she’s making sure all her children will carry the baton forward.

“I have 7 children. 1 of them unfortunately died, but all of my remaining 6 children make roosterbrood.”
Since she arrived last week, Capetonians have been flocking to taste the traditional bread.
And…Tannie Poppie is not planning on retiring anytime soon.
“As long as I am alive, and my eyes are open, I will continue braaiing my roosterbrood.”
Sadly, Van As will only be in Cape Town until Friday, as she will be returning home to Laingsburg. Those interested in meeting the foodie legend can head to 2 Koedoe Street where Naomi’s stand is situated, or simply give Naomi a call at 065 650 9374 to place your orders.
