The teaching staff at Kayamandi Primary School in Stellenbosch are receiving trauma support, following a fatal shooting at the school last week.

A 54-year-old man was gunned down on the school premises on Friday afternoon.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said a murder investigation is ongoing, with no arrests made yet.

“Stellenbosch police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on Friday afternoon, 21 November 2025, at about 13:10, at a primary school, in Winnie Mandela Drive, Kayamandi, where a 54 year old male was shot and fatally wounded,” said Twigg.

The motive for the attack is also not known.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said it is shocked and saddened by the “tragic and deeply disturbing” incident.

She said, based on reports she received on Friday, the incident appears to have been a “targeted attack”.

“According to initial reports, an armed individual entered the school premises… and approached the victim, who was seated under a tree,” said Hammond.

She further confirmed that learners had already been dismissed by the time of the incident.

Hammond extended the department’s condolences to the victim’s family, friends and school community.

“Counselling and trauma support teams have been dispatched to the school to assist staff members, who are understandly devasteated by this senseless act of violence.”

She has urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice.
