South Africa Must Embrace the AI Economy

Published on

South Africa must embrace the AI Economy before it’s too late. That’s the warning from the company, Specno, as global powers forge ahead with artificial intelligence (AI) strategies. The company’s chairperson, Daniel Novitzka, has issued a bold call to South African lawmakers: Act now or risk being left behind.

The AI Economy

Speaking at the 2025 Innovator’s Den Forum in Cape Town, Novitzkas urged policymakers to look forward rather than backwards, warning that outdated debates are stalling progress in a world moving rapidly toward an AI-driven future.

Is South Africa Ready?

He says, while the world codes, we are debating the issue. Novitzkas says instead of grappling with cutting-edge AI policy, we’re stuck rehashing internet access issues. Meanwhile, the global economy is evolving – with or without us. He has emphasised that the consequences of delay will fall hardest on young South Africans eager to enter the tech industry.

AI is a National Asset

Countries like the U.S., Finland, and Italy already regulate AI use, deepfakes, and ethical frameworks. South Africa, however, has yet to take meaningful steps. Novitzkas stressed that AI is not only about automation but also creativity and economic empowerment.

“AI is the toolbox for tomorrow. It can enable local solutions with global impact,” he said.

Unlocking Innovation and Jobs Through AI

Novitzkas highlighted practical benefits, from streamlining services at the Department of Home Affairs to empowering small businesses with affordable, professional content creation tools.

“What we need is a regulatory framework that supports innovation, not stifles it,” he urged.

A Call for Visionary Policy

The potential for job creation, innovation, and digital entrepreneurship is vast – if the right policy is in place.

“We don’t have to choose between equity and innovation. We can, and must, build a digital economy that fosters both.”

From Missed Opportunities to a Missed Future

Specno’s message is clear: South Africa must shift from reactive policymaking to bold, future-focused strategies—or risk being sidelined in the AI revolution.
