On Friday the 16th of March at 7:22am the biggest competition on radio gave one lucky Capetonian her share of a quarter of a million rand. Alwanda, a police officer from Durbanville, was the first caller during Friday’s edition of the Smile Secret Sound and correctly identified the sound that had been intriguing Cape Town for 2 months – a pizza being cut with a pizza cutter.  Bobby & Lindy were on their toes watching the ref and as soon as he gave the thumbs up, 8 weeks of tension had been broken and they could say they were now giving away R50 000!

For Alwanda a combination of careful listening, home cooking, persistence and a bit of luck helped her identify the sound and win the easiest money in town. After calling the Smile Breakfast show almost every day since the start of the competition in January to try get through, she said she was making pizzas at home when something sounded familiar.

“When I cut the pizza the sound of the pizza knife going through the dough and hitting the board sounded just like what I had been hearing on the radio.”

Alwanda also said she wasn’t expecting to win the money but just wanted to give it a shot. When Bobby & Lindy got the thumbs up from the referee they were equally as surprised and couldn’t contain their excitement. They both later teased each other for screaming with glee directly into the studio microphones, which was enough confirmation for Alwanda that she had just won R50 000. She says she is going to give some of the money to her parents and would also like to use it towards some home improvement projects.

For the rest of Cape Town it was also a welcome win – knowing that somebody had identified the Smile Secret Sound, and while some may be disappointed that they didn’t correctly identify what that sound was, there is still some good news.  There is a brand new Smile Secret Sound worth R50 000.  Listen out for it every weekday morning at 7:15 and get ready to call 0861 400 904 to take a guess and claim your share of a quarter of a million rand.
