The six missing fishermen, hailing from Houtbay and Hawston, who went missing off the Cape Point coast on Saturday evening, have been found unharmed in the deep sea.
This followed an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple resources, reaching in excess of 80 nautical miles (148 kilometres) South East of Cape Point.
The men were reported missing by their families on Sunday, after they failed to return from their expedition on Saturday evening.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s Fisheries Patrol vessel, Ellen Khuzwayo, located and recovered the six fishermen.
They arrived back in Simonstown earlier today, after an NSRI Simonstown rescue craft was launched and escorted them on their last leg.
The NSRI has lauded the support and efforts of the maritime community as well as the extensive search carried out by DFFE Fisheries Patrol vessels Ellen Khuzwayo and Ruth First.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says these vessels extensively searched a plotted a search grid taking sea drift, wind speeds and direction into account.
It is as yet uncertain how the men ended up in the deep sea.
