Six alleged extortionists have died in a shootout with police near Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape. The incident happened on the R61 between Mthatha and Ngcobo yesterday, when police responded to reports of extortion in the area.

Six alleged extortionists have died in a shootout with police near Mthatha

 

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the suspects opened fire on officers after their vehicle was stopped. The police members then returned fire.

 

IPID is probing the case

 

The Independent Police Investigation Directorate is investigating the incident.
