Western Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) have confirmed that the police watchdog, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), is investigating a fatal crash between a delivery vehicle and a police vehicle.

The fatal incident occurred on Voortrekker Road in Bellville on Monday, when a delivery driver riding a scooter was struck by a marked SAPS vehicle.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are now the subject of an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

IPID spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, confirmed that the driver of the delivery driver died on the scene.

“A police vehicle was allegedly involved in an accident with the Checkers Sixty60 driver… and the case is currently under investigation,” confirmed Shuping.

Phaladi said no arrests have been made as yet.

He further noted that the exact circumstances will become apparent once the directorate finalises its investigation.

“The full details of what exactly happened will be determined once the investigations are complete,” Shuping said.

The Shoprite Group has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased. It advised that the well-being of its employees as well as the drivers (who work as independent contractors) remains a top priority.

The Group further noted that its delivery drivers receive regular training to ensure safety.

“Drivers receive extensive and regular training which covers advanced driving skills, defensive and anti-hijacking techniques, safety protocols and accident procedures,” said the media team in response to enquiry from Smile90.4FM News.
