SANParks has urged people to stay off trails at Silvermine and Tokai after the recent fires, as they are still managing flare-ups. The Head of Communications and SANParks spokesperson, JP Louw, says there are still occasional flare-ups at Tokai and Silvermine. He has urged members of the public to stay off trails for their safety.

At the same time, Louw has said, it would be premature to allow people back on the trails while the clearing of nails and pins is still underway. He says the area remains unstable underfoot.

SANParks has called on members of the public not to enter closed trails because it could be dangerous. Louw says this could result in the trampling of emerging vegetation or the disturbance of wildlife that has minimal areas of refuge while the vegetation cover regrows.
SANParks – Don’t enter closed trails
Louw has said that at this stage, it’s impossible to predict when the closed areas will be opened. He says announcements will be made at the appropriate moments. A cold and windy weekend lies ahead for Cape Town residents as a cold front is set to hit the Mother City.

A Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves
This will bring along strong to gale force winds and rough sea conditions along the coast. The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves from this evening into tomorrow. Louw says this weather will necessitate another assessment as rains will inevitably destabilise slopes and cause localised rockfalls.
