Teams of rescuers from Wilderness Search & Rescue (WSAR) has reportedly responded to Lion’s Head on Friday night after receiving reports that a hiker had collapsed while coming down the trail.
The rapid deployment included Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedics, SANParks – Table Mountain National Park rangers and various technical teams.
According to WSAR spokesperson, David Nel, unfortunately, all attempts to resuscitate the hiker were unsuccessful.
The hiker was carried from the trail and handed over to local SAPS and forensic services members on the scene.
Nel says the incident was concluded shortly before midnight on Friday.
Extra hiker safety this Easter long weekend
With more holiday-makers looking to take on Cape Town’s hiking trails this upcoming Easter long weekend, the Wilderness Search and Rescue teams have urged hikers to take a little extra care when venturing outdoors.
Nel says temperatures have dropped, the days are shorter and the weather can be unpredictable on the mountain.
“Layered clothing works best, but please remember to pack extra warm and waterproof layers and a torch before starting out.”
Nel added that the trails are wet and slippery in places after the recent rain and urged hikers to wear appropriate closed shoes or boots.
“Take your time while descending steep rocky paths and be careful around wooden boardwalks and tree roots.”
WSAR has also urged outdoor enthusiasts to be cautious near areas affected by the recent fires as the ground may be unstable after the last rain.
