Wednesday’s graduation ceremony at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was one for the books when both a former rugby player and a musician graced the stage.

Former Springbok prop and current Deputy Mayor of Cape Town Eddie Andrews received his Bachelor of Administration honours. Singer-songwriter Craig Lucas graduated with his Masters in Development Studies. Lucas says he is already excited to start his PhD.

“The biggest difference at UWC is that the staff is incredible. The lecturers are incredible, kind and helpful. I feel like I have made a family. This is not the last you’ll see of me at UWC, I’m sure but today is just about enjoying the present and celebrating,” said a beaming Lucas.

“In 2006, I had a friend who still works here and we had a foundation that we started, and whenever I walked here I was inspired by the students. I said to myself, somewhere in the not-too-distant future I will eventually study here and do my undergrad. And that is essentially what happened in 2015, and immediately thereafter I enrolled by for my BA admin honours so here I am today, 9 years later,” said Andrews.
