The Retreat Community Health Centre is open to the public again, after operations were shut down due to a fatal shooting outside the facility.

The Western Cape SAPS confirmed that four people were shot on Bernstein Road near the clinic, in Cafda Village, on Sunday.

Spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said one 41-year-old man was killed in the incident, and three other young male victims between 16 and 21 years of age were injured. He noted that police responded to the incident at around 15:30.

“According to reports the victims were standing in the road when suspects in a unknown vehicle entered the street and opened fire on them before fleeing the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” said Twigg.

The Department of Health and Wellness said in a notice that the incident prompted lockdown measures at the clinic for the safety of patients and staff. Access to the facility was restricted, with the public told to seek emergency medical assistance at the nearest 24-hour medical facility.

“The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness confirms that, on 18 October 2026, Retreat Community Health Centre was placed under lockdown following a safety incident outside the facility… The Department is monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Member of the public are urged not to share unverified information,” read the notice.

The department’s Monique Johnstone confirmed on Monday morning, 19 October, that the facility had been reopened.

Meanwhile, Twigg confirmed that Steenberg police are investigating murder and attempted murder cases.

“Anyone with any information about this shooting incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” he urged.
