Northern Cape police have arrested a 37-year-old foreign national after seizing suspected dagga worth more than R7.5 million at the Weigh Bridge on the N1 near Colesberg on Wednesday.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien, Provincial Traffic officials stopped a truck transporting mobile toilets after receiving information that it was being used to conceal dagga.

“At approximately 1:50pm, Provincial Traffic officials stopped a white Foton truck transporting mobile toilets after receiving information that it was being used to conceal dagga. During the inspection, they detected a strong smell of dagga coming from one of the toilets and found a large bag inside.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) was called to the scene. A further search uncovered seven bulk bags wrapped in Sellotape and concealed inside the mobile toilets.

“After a thorough search, seven bulk bags wrapped in Sellotape containing 379.3 kilograms of suspected dagga, valued at more than R7,586,000 were found.”

The driver was arrested and charged with dealing in dagga. The truck and trailer were also confiscated.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Colesberg Magistrates’ Court soon.
