President Cyril Ramaphosa has shortlisted 4 candidates for the position of chief justice, with the list being submitted to the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of political parties for consideration.

The candidates are justices Mbuyiseli Madlanga; Mandisa Maya; Dunstan Mlambo; and Raymond Zondo. This is the first time in South African history that 4 chief justice candidates will be interviewed by the Commission as the president usually only nominates one person.
