As close to 900,000 candidates across the country prepare to sit for the matric exams this morning, two Cape Town teachers have shared their messages of hope and encouragement.

Jeanne Rankin is a teacher at Cannons Creek Independent School in Pinelands. Rankin – who has been rearing learners for more than three decades – said practice makes perfect:

“You’ve had 12 years minimum of schooling and you have done the hard work. Remember and have faith, and trust in yourself. And then of course there’s that very practical thing too. The more past papers you use to practice, the more at ease you will feel for your exams. I hope it goes very, very well with all of you,” said Rankin.

The Class of 2024 will sit for English Paper 3 at 09h00, followed by Afrikaans Paper 3 at 14h00.

Another veteran educator is Anthony Mentor. He is currently based at Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt (German International School Cape Town).

“Know that you are remembered, supported and loved by your parents, families, friends, teachers and communities. Please also remember that even though this exam is important, it is only the final hurdle of your school career. You’ve made it thus far, so we believe that you will succeed in this last one too,” concluded Mentor.
