Social grant beneficiaries across South Africa are being urged to urgently replace their SASSA Gold Cards with new Postbank Black Cards, as the July payment cycle becomes the final opportunity to access grants using the old system.

Postbank has confirmed that the SASSA Gold Cards will be phased out and will no longer be accepted for transactions after 30 August 2026, leaving thousands of beneficiaries at risk of being unable to access their social grants if they do not act in time.

The transition to the new cards has been underway since April 2026, but uptake has been slower than expected despite extended efforts to assist beneficiaries.

Postbank Chief Commercial Officer, Thami Cele, has made a strong appeal to beneficiaries to act without delay.

“We appeal to every grant beneficiary who has not yet migrated to the new Black Cards to use the July payment period to replace their SASSA Gold Cards. Failure to do so will result in beneficiaries being unable to access their payments with their SASSA Gold Cards, as the cards have expired and will no longer be accepted in the payments system.”

He added that the replacement process is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to social grants.

“The replacement of the cards is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to payments, and we encourage all affected grant beneficiaries to act now and avoid unnecessary inconvenience.”

Postbank says beneficiaries are now running out of time, warning that waiting until the last moment could lead to long queues, delays, and possible disruption in accessing much-needed funds.

To ease the transition, the bank has extended operating days at many card replacement sites, including Saturdays, in an effort to give beneficiaries more flexibility to switch to the new system.
