Police will maintain a strong presence in Kagiso on the West Rand of Gauteng, following a day of violent and chaotic protests by community members against illegal mining and crime in the area. Residents attacked a group of suspected illegal miners in the Krugersdorp township after a gang rape last week shocked the nation. Residents clashed with police, dodged rubber bullets and barricaded roads. Police fired stun grenades from a helicopter to disperse the crowds.
