The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a murder investigation after a man was shot and killed during unrest in Alexandra, amid nationwide anti-illegal immigration marches held on June 30.
According to SAPS, the violence broke out when community members allegedly looted foreign-owned spaza shops between 8th and 9th Avenue. Gunshots were fired during the chaos, killing one person.
“The victim has not yet been identified. Police investigations are underway,” SAPS confirmed.
Authorities have appealed for calm and urged members of the public to assist with information.
“We urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report to their nearest police station.”
In a separate incident in Hillbrow, three suspects were arrested after two people, including a 17-year-old, were shot and injured during a protest.
Police allege the suspects opened fire on protesters moving through the street, injuring two people. The situation escalated rapidly, with protesters reportedly setting the suspects’ vehicle alight in response.
SAPS confirmed that all three suspects were arrested at the scene. Two licensed firearms, believed to have been used in the shooting, were also recovered.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted murder.
