Claremont police have registered an inquest for further investigation, after a woman’s death at Cavendish Square shopping centre on Monday evening.

Officers responded to a complaint at about 20:10, when they found the body of a 46-year-old woman, who was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

Police say an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death. According to reports, the woman may have jumped to her death from one of the levels.

Netwerk24 reports an eyewitness heard a “loud thud” and “a scream”, and the next moment, bystanders gathered around the body of the woman, near the Exclusive Books and Seattle Coffee shop on the bottom floor.

Cavendish Square Centre Manager Faizah Behardien says they are “deeply saddened by the incident in which an individual took her own life.”

Behardien expressed the centre’s condolences on the woman’s passing.

“We ask that the privacy and dignity of the individual and their family be respected, especially on social media, as they mourn their loss.”
