Gugulethu police have arrested two men for extorting businesses in Siqalo, an informal settlement in the community.

According to police, the disgruntled business owners in the community informed the members of Gugulethu SAPS that they received letters from the alleged extortionists demanding a protection fee.

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says the officers met with the business leaders and formulated a plan to bring an end to these extortionists who hold the community to ransom.

Police allegedly deployed officers strategically around the business who were targeted and received the letters and were waiting for the arrival of the persons of interest.

“Their patience were rewarded when two males aged 19 and 25 entered the premises,” said Swaartbooi

Swaartbooi says the officers then apprehended the two males for extortion on Wednesday.

Once charged, they are expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on charges of extortion.
