Fuel prices outlook for August: Diesel costs may increase

The outlook for fuel prices in August is mixed, with potential bad news for those who drive diesel vehicles.

Mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund shows petrol prices could drop by up to 24 cents a litre, offering some relief for motorists.

But diesel drivers may face hikes of around 62 cents per litre.

The changes are driven by global oil price movements, which have remained volatile, though the rand’s strength has cushioned some of the impact.

There are still over two weeks left before the final prices are fixed, which could change the outlook significantly.

Meanwhile, train commuters can also expect an increase in fares from next month. This is the first increase in a decade, with commutes up to 40 kilometres to cost R2,50 more from 1 August 2025.
