Western Cape Police have made several arrests and confiscated a number of illegal firearms in the Mitchells Plain area, following the recent fatal shooting incidents that erupted in the community.
On Thursday, five people were shot and killed, and seven others were injured in separate shooting incidents in Beacon Valley, Tafelsig and Town Centre. Police have since bolstered multi-disciplinary deployments to the area in their efforts to prevent further occurrences and to arrest those responsible for these attacks.
According to police, officers were divided into teams and areas such as Beacon Valley, Tafelsig and Portlands were targeted, where several houses were searched.
From 14:00 on Thursday to 02:00 on Friday, a total of 43 identified gang houses were searched. At one house, a licensed 9mm Norinco pistol and ammunition were confiscated, and an inquiry was registered.
According to police Captain Frederick C. van Wyk, five firearms and an assortment of ammunition were confiscated, and seven suspects aged between 17 and 46 were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Additionally, fourteen suspects aged between 20 and 39 were arrested for murder and attempted murder, and a 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition.
Van Wyk says all the suspects are due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ court on Monday, 7 July 2025, on their respective charges.

At the same time, the City of Cape Town is also offering a R100,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the recent shootings.
Additionally, the City’s Safety and Security Directorate is working closely with SAPS as additional staff members were deployed to the area yesterday, including officers attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP), the Metro Police Tactical Response Unit and the Traffic Services’ Roadblock Unit.
“We call on residents to come forward with any information that may assist law enforcement agencies,” said Acting Cape Town Mayor Alderman Eddie Andrews
