President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed Minister of Higher Education, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane.
The Presidency announced this on Monday evening.
It comes after controversy that she hired several people linked to the ANC in positions with the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA) board. She was meant to explain these appointments in Parliament this week.
Nkabane is replaced by the former deputy in that department, Mr. Buti Kgwaridi Manamela and former MEC and Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has been appointed as the new deputy.
“Mr. Manamela was until this appointment serving as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, a role he held from the 6th administration… Dr Dube’s long government leadership experience includes serving as MEC for Coopertaive Government and Traditional affairs and Premier of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal amongst other roles,” said the Presidency.
This comes after more than a month of consistent complaints and a formal accusation by the DA. The party has claimed victory in getting Nkabane removed.
Last month, the DA referred Nkabane to the ethics committee on allegations that she misled Parliament regarding the appointment of ANC-linked individuals to the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) board.
A week later, they gave the president 48 hours to fire her after DA-linked Deputy Minister, Andrew Whitfield, was sacked.
At the start of this month, they laid criminal charges against Nkabane.

“The departure of Minister Nobuhle Nkabane, after lying to Parliament to cover up ANC cadre deployment, comes after relentless DA pressure in the fight against ANC corruption, wrongdoing and criminality,” said DA National Spokesperson, Karabo Khakhau.
