The Democratic Alliance (DA) is taking direct aim at the ANC’s executive leadership, with criminal charges set to be laid against Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane on Tuesday.

The DA accuses Minister Nkabane of lying to Parliament.

The charge-laying will be spearheaded by DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille, Deputy Chief Whip Baxolile Nodada MP, and National Spokesperson Karabo Khakhau MP at the Cape Town Central Police Station.

This development comes ahead of Nkabane’s budget debate in the National Council of Provinces.

“Lying ANC Minister, Nobuhle Nkabane, must go! She misled Parliament about her ‘independent panel’ and compromised individuals who were appointed to high-paying SETA Boards,” said the party on social media.

The DA’s actions are part of a growing political standoff between the party and President Cyril Ramaphosa, whom the DA accuses of protecting allegedly corrupt ANC ministers while cracking down on opposition voices. The tension hit a breaking point after Ramaphosa dismissed DA Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield over an unsanctioned U.S. trip, while according to the DA failing to act against ANC ministers accused of corruption.

In response, the DA recently withdrew from the upcoming National Dialogue and announced it would abstain from voting on the budgets of ANC ministers it believes are corrupt.
