The Bellville South Community Day Centre (CDC) has opened a dedicated clinic designed for adolescents and youth, marking a significant milestone in accessible healthcare for young people in the community.
In a statement, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness says the day centre aims to be more than just a healthcare facility and is envisioned as a safe haven where young people can access confidential and youth-friendly services tailored to their needs. The centre offers services from reproductive health to mental wellness. The clinic also offers a range of services aimed at promoting the holistic well-being of its young visitors.
The launch commenced with an impressive display of local talent from participating schools and motivational speeches by youth members at the community hall. Young performers showcased their unique abilities, taking centre stage to share their passions.
After the talent show, students, educators, and healthcare professionals gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the youth clinic. Thanks to Love Life’s support, artist Bernard Greybe adorned the clinic’s exterior with a vibrant mural.
As part of the festivities, youth were encouraged to create spray-painted art on the clinic’s interior walls. This hands-on involvement allowed them to personalize the space and take pride in their contribution.
“We’re excited to open our doors and provide a welcoming space for the youth of Bellville. This new clinic is on our clinic grounds, but outside of the main clinic and close to the entrance which allows youth to access care easily and safely,” facility manager, Sr Caty May.
May added that the goal is to create an environment where young people feel heard, respected, and empowered to prioritise their health. She also encouraged all youth to spread the word about the new clinic and to share feedback on how they want to receive care.
“We want to help you access the healthcare that you need.”
The launch event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting. Youth attendees also received goody bags and informative flyers to aid them in making informed health decisions.
