New driver’s license card coming in 2023

Published on

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced the roll-out of a new driver’s license card for South African motorists.

The Minister said Cabinet had approved this roll-out, which will see a new license card issued to motorists from next year.

The new cars will provide more-secure design features and adhere to international standards.

He says the new card will be piloted from 1 November 2023 until 31 March 2024.

He also urged motorists, who have not yet renewed their expired drivers’ license cards, to do so as a matter of urgency.

The Minister says the backlog of expired licenses, created by Covid-19 lockdowns, has now been cleared, creating more capacity to help motorists renew their licenses.

This backlog has been cleared by 14 July 2022.

Mbalula says traffic authorities have, to date, managed to finalize and issued in excess of 2 million expired driver’s license cards.

A large majority of motorists, who have not yet renewed their expired drivers’ licenses, have outstanding fines or infringements registered to their names.

Mbalula says even though there now is capacity at traffic offices, for motorists to renew their licenses, more than 1.2-million SA drivers have not yet done so.
